GIFKINS DOVETAIL LIVE-THE DESKTOP BOX PART 1 14.11.20

GIFKINS DOVETAIL BOXMAKING SESSION, SUN 15NOV20
THE DESKTOP BOX, PART 1

The art of fine box making is based on combining the elements of good design, simple techniques and years of practise. This week’s box is an excellent example. The Desktop box is a deceptively simple box, with clean lines and a close-fitting lid.

Over a number of weeks, Col Hosie will step you through the process of cutting the carcass, with an expanded dovetail joint, and cutting the rebates for the floor and the lid. Next, he will shape the floor and the lid to fit into the frame, then cut feet into bottom of the frame.

After fitting and glueing the components, the next job is to sand back the overlapping joints, then separate the lid from the top of the frame. The last box making process is to cut the sleeves to nest the lid. Finally, Col will demonstrate and explain the process of sanding the box…how to start and how to finish!

We hope you enjoy Col’s box making demonstrations. He’s an experienced teacher and woodworker who enjoys sharing his knowledge.

The aim of our live streaming sessions is to introduce you to box making techniques, from fundamental through to advanced. From simple boxes, like the Desktop box, through to the large jewellery box with multiple elements. Each with different and sometimes challenging techniques. Col will also introduce other small joinery projects, like a small cabinet with drawers.
